Braunschweig (Brunswick) - Hildesheim

We are on our way across to the Wesser River area and so we decided to go via Braunschweig and Hildesheim - two towns that were heavily bombed towards the end of the WWII - Hildesheim only three weeks before the end - what a tragedy!
 Henry the Lion - Braunschweig
Did some house keeping before being away by 9.30 am. A quick trip of 13 km to Braunschweig, arrived just as the rain commenced. A much cooler morning.

As we drive into Braunschweig we were immediately taken by the large imposing building of classical design - thought that it must have been the castle but, as it turned out, it was the frontage of a very modern indoor shopping mall. Much of the reconstruction of Braunschweig attempted this blend of the old with the modern.

Around lunch-time we pushed onto Hildesheim, another town completely reconstructed since 1945. Joined a German tour of the reconstructed Dom but it was all too much after a short time! The tour guide seemed to mention the English a lot - obviously the English we the culprits for the destruction!

We left the Dom in the safe hands of the tour guide and headed for the old market square which, again, has been totally reconstructed in  the 1980s. What a great result. They have attempted to replace the old buildings with identical buildings.
