Stendal - Gardelegen

Warm night again and in for another hot day!

Up early this morning, breakfast and walked into the centre of Stendal. This old Hanseatic League town has a remarkable history and has remained a very attractive place to visit. The craftsmanship on display in two of the churches is nothing but outstanding.
The Rathaus (14th and 15th century) and Marienkirche (1447)  in the market square.

The Roland Statue 1525
The Rathaus, the Marienkirche and the Roland Statue in the market square shows the importance of the town on the past.
The beautifully carved screen in the Marienkirche .

The other gate - the Uenglingen Gate (1450/60) part of the old cities fortification.
Had a coffee before moving on to another Hanseatic League town in Gardelegen for lunch. Now well into the 30s - found some shade, had lunch and then did a quick walk of the old town.
Gardelegen Rathaus
Friday is a day for weddings and another was taking place at the Rathaus. Arrived at the time the bride and groom were cutting a log of silver birtch with a crosscut saw! The number of times you stop during the cutting will tell you the number of children you will have! Not sure how many this couple had! But another very pretty village.
The said log!
Also, met a man whose son has a restaurant in Lygon St in Melbourne.

We decided to drive on later in the afternoon - not a good move. It became very hot and TomTom seemed to take us a very long way around, plus a major detour due to an accident caused extra mileage to be drive. Arrived at Schoppenstedt after five and very hot!
The ancient  city wall!
